Deputy Commissioner of Communications Speaks at a Leading European Postal Services Conference

The Deputy Commissioner of Communications, Mr. Petros Galides, accompanied by the officer responsible for Postal Services, Mr. Michalis Nicolaou, participated as a speaker at the 11th Annual Postal and Delivery Conference 2025, organized by Copenhagen Economics in Copenhagen on April 10, 2025. Mr. Galides took part in his capacity as Vice-Chair of the European Regulators Group for Postal Services (ERGP) for the year 2025 and participated at a high-level panel discussion titled “Executive Viewpoints.”

In his presentation, he outlined the many developments that are transforming the sector. He explained ERGP’s positions on critical issues and highlighted the urgent need to modernize the European regulatory framework to respond to the rapid developments in the sector. As he noted, “the postal sector has evolved from traditional letter delivery into a complex ecosystem of parcel delivery services, based on the modern needs of current and future users, and enhanced by technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, drones, and automation.”

Mr. Galides presented ERGP’s key directions and proposals for the future Regulatory Framework for Postal Services, focusing on the following:

Establishing clear and sustainable rules for new delivery models and digital platforms,

Reviewing the Universal Postal Service to align with modern user needs, including reducing delivery frequency and implementing cost-based pricing policies,

Strengthening consumer protection and creating effective complaint mechanisms,

Promoting environmental sustainability, and

Enhancing the security and resilience of infrastructure.

"As the postal sector faces the challenges of competition, digitalization, and sustainability, the need for adaptation is not an option —it is a prerequisite for its future," he stressed.

The conference brought together more than 100 participants from 30 countries, including representatives of regulatory authorities, postal operators, e-commerce businesses, professional associations, and consumer organizations. The discussions focused on critical and important topics such as new markets and technologies, the role of universal service providers in the new environment, the regulation of digital platforms, and consumer expectations in the modern postal landscape.
